Prager leads Saints to title

STAFF REPORTS

Limestone goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan was credited with nine saves in the conference championship win on Sunday. Junior attack Racquel Prager scored a gamehigh six goals as No. 4 Limestone (15-0, 7-0 CC) delivered a convincing 15-5 victory over No. 15 Pfeiffer (12-5, 6-1) to win the 2011 Conference Carolinas Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday.

Leading only 5-2 at the half and following a Pfeiffer goal in the opening minute of the second half, the Saints quickly erased all chance of an upset as they scored the next five goals over a span of just over 10 minutes to push the lead to 10-3 with 17:11 to play.

That run featured five different goal scorers, including freshman midfielder

Jessica Aguanno, Prager, senior attacker Casey Wilcox, freshman attack Sarah Oor and junior midfielder Jessie Aguglia.

The Falcons would answer with back-to-back goals by Liz Melesh and Jessica Moulton to close to within 10-5 but that would be as close as they would get.

Over the final 14:51, Limestone notched another five goal run that was bookended by a pair of goals from Aguanno with three straight from Conference Carolinas Tournament Most Valuable Player Racquel Prager.

It was a far different game in the first half as neither team was able to find the back of the net for nearly the first 10 minutes of the game.

All that changed on a goal by Prager with 20:08 remaining in the half. That opened the flood gates as Aguglia followed with a goal at 18:46 and freshman midfielder Katie Farrell delivered the third goal in less than three minutes at the 17:45 mark.

The score would not stay at 3-0 for long as the Falcons’ Sarah Hebberd connected off a pass from Alex Cook at 16:03.

Six minutes later Prager would extend Limestone’s lead back to three when she connected on a free position attempt for her second goal of the game.

Pfeiffer’s Natalie Marvin made it 4-2 with 5:04 to play in the opening 30 minutes but the Saints would end on a flourish as Aguglia found the back of the net with just 13 seconds remaining to head into the half with a 5-2 advantage.

Prager led the Limestone attack with a game-high six goals while Aguanno and Aguglia each delivered three scores.

Oor and Wilcox each added a goal and an assist while Oor had three ground balls.

Junior attack Lindsay Malecki and sophomore midfielder Brittany Howard each chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan allowed only five goals and made nine saves in 60 minutes of action to improve to a perfect 15-0 on the season.
